Patterned Hair Loss in Men and Women

Hair loss in men and women is the most common of maladies in today’s fast paced lifestyle especially in the young. It can start as early as late teens in boys and girls alike.

Why do we loose hair?

The genetic makeup of an individual has a strong bearing on the hair loss pattern. This makes the hair on top of the head susceptible to the male hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that results in shrinking (miniaturization) and eventual hair fall. It is now possible to find out by a simple blood test whether one is carrying the gene that can lead to balding in the future. Often I find that patients who come in for hair loss treatments have been through a phase of physical or mental stress following which the problem of hair loss has started.

There are other causes for hair loss that can be easily treated like dandruff, psoriasis and various forms of Alopecia. A dermatologist is the only trained person to diagnose and treat scalp disorders.

How do you stop hair loss?

At The Dermo Cosmetology Clinic, you will get advice on hair loss stopping methods which can include medications and in some cases, surgery for hair restoration. Every patient has a consultation with the dermatologist Dr Nilesh Goyal, where in a detailed history and examination is conducted. For individuals who are progressing towards androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern), the dermatologist would go through a host of approved medications and surgery options.

Medical Treatments (Regenerative)

These include 5HT receptor antagonists, Finasteride and Dutasteride, which reduce the sensitivity of the hair follicle on the top of the head to Di hydro Testosterone (DHT), the male hormone. These are available as tablets that need to be taken once daily.

Minoxidil lotion is licensed for use in Androgenetic Alopecia. The 5% is recommended for men whilst the 2% is given to women who can tolerate this medication.

The clinic offers Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for stimulation of hair regrowth. In the present time, Newer therapies for Hair Regeneration are being researched throughout the world. These include Platelet Rich Plasma and Stem Cell Therapy. Ask your dermatologist whether you could be a suitable candidate for these therapies.

Hair Transplantation Surgery (Restorative)– Follicular Unit Grafting click here

Hair Transplantation is the only Permanent Procedure for hair replacement. The procedure has evolved over the years where now near natural hairline and regrowth can be given by a well qualified hair transplant surgeon.

The process involves acquiring hair follicles from the non hormone sensitive areas of scalp & body and moving them to the bald areas.

With the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method, hair can be taken from back and sides of head, chest, back and even from armpits and beard areas for transplantation. The Follicular Unit Implantation (FUI) is done in the desired area by making tiny slits in the skin.

The entire procedure is done under local anaesthesia which makes the procedure Extremely Safe and Painless. It is a long procedure during which the patients are given a choice of listening to music, watch movie on a personal screen or even catch up on sleep.

The FUE procedure leaves No Scar at the site from where the hairs are taken out.

The chances for the grafted hair to be rejected are minimal as it is the patient’s own hair. It is estimated that upto 95% graft survival can be achieved in the well motivated individual.

It takes almost 3- 5 months for the grafted hair to show regrowth. These hairs behave like natural hair and can be styled as per the person’s choice.

Advantages of Follicular Unit Grafting:

  • Permanent Hair regrowth; Natural Hairline Achievable
  • Extremely Safe & Successful procedure
  • No Scar at the back of head
  • Painless apart from the discomfort of injection of the local anaesthetic
  • Multiple sessions can be done in the same patient without any increased risk of scarring
  • No Hospital Stay required after the Surgery
